Chess & HIIT: a great way to exercise your mind and body at the same time while racing against the clock.

What is this about?

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is usually associated with running, cycling, or other forms of structured exercise.

But what does HIIT have to do with chess?

What if playing chess could be almost as physically intense as running a race? It turns out that all you need is a big enough board — and a short enough clock.

Join us for a giant chess bullet event: possibly the most active way to play chess.

How it works

We’ll be playing on giant chess boards, but there’s a catch: you’ll only have a couple of minutes for the entire game.

That means you may have to literally run between moves to avoid losing on time. Depending on the exact time control, a game can range from moderate exercise to a surprisingly intense HIIT session.

No particular skill or fitness level is required. Whether you’re a grandmaster or learned the rules yesterday, a competitive runner or someone who hasn’t run in years, you’re welcome to join.

The goal is to have fun, try something unusual, and enjoy a very different kind of chess — not to worry about ratings, results, or athletic performance.

What to bring

  • Comfortable shoes
  • A chess clock, if you have one — optional, but appreciated
